This has been a crazy stretch of summer and we are trying to fall back into some kind of "normalness", whatever that means in the summertime, after being gone for most of last week.
We were called home to my parent's house under the sad circumstance of my Dad's eldest sister, my beautiful Aunt Elaine passing away. Her funeral was extremely sad and she will be dearly missed, but thankfully she is out of the horrible pain which she had suffered for quite some time.
Our visit was not all sadness though, as we enjoyed spending time with family that we had not seen for quite a while, and spent a very enjoyable day at The Detroit Zoo last Friday. I had not been there in YEARS and it was far better than I ever remembered it. The boys had a good time seeing all of the different animals and even managed to get up close and personal with a peacock they stalked.

When I asked Michael what his favorite animal was, he answered in true boyish form, "well, certainly not any of the furry or feathered animals". Silly of me to ask. Both boys favored the amphibian and reptile exhibits and spent a great deal of time examining all of the slimy creatures. Personally, I was just happy to be in the air conditioning.
And in keeping with my secret plan of slowly turning this into a photo blog, following are a handful of animal shots from the zoo...

It was a hot day so the lions, tigers and bears ("oh, my") took to being lazy and didn't provide us with much by way of entertainment.
All in all we had a nice visit, circumstances for the visit aside. There was only one stomach virus and two extremely bloody noses tarnishing the trip. What? Oh, that's right -- we were one body fluid away from hitting them all. Last Thursday Speedo got some kind of stomach virus that knocked him out for the day, while Michael, not to be outdone, had a huge bloody nose in the middle of the night all over Grandma's comforter - your welcome Mom! ;-) Thankfully everyone seems to be doing better now.
And just to give an example that I never know what these boys will conjure up next, I will end this post with the following video of Erick and Mike fishing for...well, what else would you fish for in a suburban backyard but a rabbit. That's right. A rabbit.
Boy Family represent!

Erick can come see my bunnies anytiem. I am so sorry to hear about your aunt but glad that her pain and suffering has ended. Beautiful photos of the zoo!!
It should be noted that no hooks were used during the filming of this edition of Grosse Pointe Wilde. We merely tied the line to a carrot.
wow, you got some awesome zoo shots! love the one of Mikey and his head in the little peep hole.
and then Erick says I told you it was stupid Dad
My kids would have thrown rocks or sticks, we aren't as subtle in Texas
HILLARIOUS.....maybe I will try fishing for rabbit the next time I am at mom & dad's - too funny! What would of been even more funny would be to see Eliot come runing out of the bushes after the bait! HA! HA! Too cute!!! ...what will they think of next. BTW - did you READ my EMAIL about Jollystone Park in Grand Haven? We owe Homer a camping trip ~ it's close to you guys!!! What weekend in September??????????
