Speedo's party!!!

Last night we celebrated Erickson's birthday with some of his friends. After always saying that I would never have a party at Chuck E. Cheese's, I finally decided to give in to the pleading little voices and have a party there. I have to admit that it went rather swimmingly and I could see going back again. The kids had a blast and all we really had to do was bake a cake, throw some goody bags together and show up.

My only other experience with planning a birthday party was when Michael turned 6 and we had a pirate-themed party for him down at the park. Let's just say that most everything that could go wrong did -- too many kids, too much over-planning of silly details, a fever-stricken Speedo, a cake that fell apart after it was made which resulted in a 5:30 AM run to Meijers the day of the party to buy everything to make a SECOND cake...the list goes on. It was completely overwhelming and the behind the scenes was such a debacle that it makes me shiver thinking about it. However, I will spare you more of the nasty details and focus instead on the fun of yesterday.

Here are some pictures of the "bert-day boy" and his Scooby-Doo Mystery Machine cake (use your imagination people). Clearly the little characters make the cake, otherwise it looked like his cake was just a conversion van or an ice cream truck. Not my best work, but I am over it - the birthday boy was happy and that was good enough for me. We had a last minute change from Sponge Bob as the boys have been on a Scooby-Doo kick these last few days . I did not realize that that show has been around since 1969???? Crazy. All in all, everyone had a great time and Speedo received some cool gifts. He was especially excited to go home with a "gold" medal with the mouse's face on it (note picture with Chuck E above) and has been wearing it a greater part of the day today.

that cake looks awesome!
I'm glad to see someone else is crazy enough to make their own cakes.

Crazy might be the optimal word! I should put a post up of cakes from years past :-) I enjoy making them!!!

And of course, thank you! I was actually thinking that fondant would have been a good option for covering the cake, but unlike others (huh-hmmmm) I have yet to be brave enough to tackle that arena yet!!!

Just to make sure, the "pleading little voices" are in your head, right?

Great Cake! (As usual!!) Fondant is so easy. It's like pla-doh. You can mold anything out of it, paint food color on it and cover an ugly cake with it. They sell it (Wilton's) at Michael's or Joanne's. They even have Chocolate. I'm a fan.

You seem to do well with the coconut covering though!!

Looks like a great party.

definitely do a post with all your previous cakes; I would love to see that.

I never thought of doing pre-made fondant... that might be the way to go if you try it; I made mine and that was the hard and time consuming part.

The cake is great--peer pressure, I had to comment on the cake......but, what I really wanted to say is, I love how Erick looks like he's tilting your chin up with his finger. "Mom, look at the camera..." (Good job! Your boys faces say it all!)

peer pressure cake comments - too funny Megan! I think I will do a post about cakes from years past. A fun walk down memory lane :-) Especially since I will be baking yet another one soon as Michael turns 8 on Wednesday. EIGHT! My that makes me feel old!!!

You're not old at all, of course I have to say that since we're the same age. But, maybe it's time to start using, "we started young", in which case you could be 25, the age you appear to be!

What's the theme for Michael's party? Will had a violin!

One more fondant tid-bit: they also sell some really bright neon colors. I've tried to make it from scratch and found it to be horrible!! You are so creative...you'll love using this stuff.

You know, I can't think if I have ever tasted fondant before - I imagine it is pretty good? Perhaps I will try that for Michael's cake. No final decision on theme yet for his b-day....

Kris - I love the violin theme! That is so cute :-) I am still planning on sending a music stand unless I hear otherwise. (Late as usual, ugh!)

Fondant...mildly sweet, rather non-tasting actually. It's just fun to decorate with it!! Do you honestly care what the cake tastes like?

I'll email some of the violin. It was kind of cute.
