A walk down memory lane, with a sharp left turn at student lounge envy...

This weekend Mike had some appointments down in Hillsdale so the boys and I decided to tag along as I hadn't been back to campus in a while and wanted to see all of the new buildings and changes we have been hearing about over the last few years.

Friend and fellow alum, Megan had forwarded me an article about the new Grewcock Student Union which had just opened early this month so I thought that I had a good idea of what to expect, but actually going there was a completely different experience.

Mike and I just kept saying over and over how ridiculous the place was - and I mean that in the sense that the place was simply over the top! I believe the correct saying would be that it was "off the hook". Compared to the comfy little Ethan Allen room/Union combo we were given, this new student center looked and felt like you were walking into a resort. We felt cheated!

The first thing you are greeted by when entering the main doors is a fantastic looking coffee bar (you will have to take my word on this as I didn't take any pictures. Duh.), beautiful and comfortable looking furniture everywhere and the sounds of classical music making it's way up from the new cafeteria and dining room downstairs. Picture the private reading area in the library with all of the beautiful furnishings - now make that what the whole place feels like. We went at lunch time and the whole place smelled delicious.

Here are some pictures. I didn't take a lot from inside of the student center as I didn't want to look like too much of a loser flashing pictures of chairs and tables...but here is a sampling and a bunch of pictures from outside. The layout of the campus is completely turned around now so that Central Hall is actually more of a focal point in the middle of the buildings hosting the classrooms and teacher offices.

If you pop out the pictures into a new window you can see my comments about where stuff is located.

And for anyone who is wondering, Saga Steve still works there and looks the exact same. I felt like I needed to break out my Saga card when I walked in and saw him there. And instead of just throwing their backpacks and coats on the floor outside of the dining area, the current student body has a massive wall of cubicles in which to place their stuff. It's the little things, I know.

We also took the boys on tours of the ATO and Kappa house which both looked the exact same inside. The boys much preferred Daddy's more, how shall we say, relaxed, ATO house lifestyle and thought that my house was lame.

I have to say that I felt old after going back. There is nothing like dragging along two little kids who were whining half the way, around a college campus to make you feel out of place. It is hard to believe how long ago we surrendered the freedom of our college days for the real world. YIKES! Where has the time gone?

All in all, the campus looks amazing and I am anxious to go back when it isn't freezing cold with snow everywhere.

Nice job!

So in all of your adultness, did you have the heart to break it to Steve that he's locked up in Pee Wee Herman's body?

No, indeed I did not. I only wished for myself that I could age so gracefully!

This is great! I don't want to hear your complaints about the living conditions you had...Dennis and I were there 83-88 (cause he's a year older...not because it took us 5 years!!) We weren't allowed to wear shoes and had to walk up the hill barefooted. This place is amazing! Great shot of Dad's old place too. Saga Steve is still there? Wow...I bet that's the only thing that is the same. He is the only person with the patience to do such a tedious job every single day. Did he marry? Oh, I suddenly feel "available".

They stole your shoes and made you walk barefooted?! I would have just skipped at that point. Saga Steve is truly a living legend. He is like an attraction. And honestly, why get married when you can be on the prowl for ladies three meals a day? Ha!

I really enjoyed the pictures. I saw Saga Steve back in September, and you're right- he's hasn't aged a day in the past 10+ years.

PJ always said Laura had a thing for Saga Steve. Must have been that life-size cardboard cutout she had in her dorm room.

Mike -
the cut-out of Saga Steve was only there to cover up the one I had of you right behind it. You should have seen what we did with those. Not pretty.

BAM - the girl can hold her own. Nicely played Laura, nicely played.

Why I never! The gall! How dare you insult me so? And shanghai my betrothed into an insult pile-on?

I refuse to participate in such muck raking. The mere thought of someone fulfilling their twisted erotic fantasies with a cardboard likeness of myself is more than I can stomach! For shame!

Was that Pete Lewis on the left in the new student union playing video games by himself?

Probably best they waited until Mike left to put in the double-sided fireplace. I can't believe Galloway is still standing after... well, let's just leave it at that.
