Well, we finally did it

We finally blew up our microwave.

OK, perhaps saying we FINALLY did it is not accurate as it came as a complete surprise and scared the crap (pardon my French) out of us. And maybe blew up is a bit strong as there was not any actual explosion. However, there was an impressive show of sparks and that was good enough for me.

As I was heating up our dinner of left over chili from yesterday, all of a sudden, from the back of the microwave came a ton of sparks, smoke, and a really horrible smell of burning electronics. And no, there was not a metal fork or spoon left in the bowl.

Fortunately Mike and I were in the kitchen when it happened so we were able to quickly unplug the microwave and assess the damage. The final verdict was that it had served us well these three or so years and that they definitely don't make appliances like they used to. READ: Piece of crap microwave died after only three years.

The horrible smell continues to linger throughout the house even after the microwave was ceremoniously hauled out to the trash can by Michael and Erick. I am hopeful the smell will be gone by morning.

On the upside, at least our dinner was not ruined, it just took a little longer to heat up on the stove.

So, the idea of eating chili which had been peppered by a spray of radioactive sparks didn't bother you?

ha! I was thinking the same thing that anonymous said - but the thought of starting over from scratch on a new meal might prompt me to serve a radioactive dinner as well.

Not in the least. It was already 8:00 PM, we had had a play date that resulted in 4 boys running up and down and all around the house all afternoon and I was exhausted. Truth be told, I am embarrassed to say that I suppose I didn't think about the radioactivity of the sparks! I will let you know if I start sprouting extra limbs.

O.K., not to worry, Josh and I stretched the life of our microwave by ignoring the sparks that were coming from the INSIDE side of the microwave until they started catching things on fire. At that point, we would just watch what was being heated and stop the microwave before a fire started and start it again. Then, one night, it quit altogether. I'm out of town, Josh calls with the bad news, but I think I have a quick fix....we have another one in the bar in the basement. He's like, "go downstairs? UGH!" We've got a nice new stainless Kenmore heating our food today:)

Well Robin, maybe your time will come soon. 10 years is impressive! Funny enough, Erickson had a play date today and the boy's mom was telling me how her microwave died last week after only three years and they were installing a new one this weekend. Perhaps there is something in the air! We are off to buy a new one tonight.
