We had a fantastically enjoyable birthday vacation up north and were virtually unplugged from the chaos of the world for 5 1/2 wonderful days. I ended up taking about a million pictures, so I will highlight some throughout the post and then do a slide show if you want to see more so you don't want to be here all day! So buckle down, because I sense this will be a long post...
Mike ended up fishing for salmon only once as the run seemed pretty much over and he found it more rewarding to take the boys fishing instead. On Saturday we enjoyed a delicious perch fish fry for lunch from the lake. We had taken the canoe up with us so we also had the chance to explore some new lakes as well which was fun.

(OK, so how many versions of these shots have I shown over the summer!!!)Michael learned to captain the motor on the rowboat for the first time which was quite exciting!
For Mike's birthday we had Auntie Kathy and Uncle John over for grilled pizzas and then feasted on Aunt Kathy's famous apple pie!! DELICIOUS! This has become our birthday tradition for the last 3 or 4 years and I would hate to see what would happen if Kathy tried showing up without a pie in hand!
The boys did things that the Boy Family loves to do -played by the lake, whittled with their knives, heated up rocks to boil in the lake, hunted for mushrooms, and Michael even started his own fire with his fire sparker...
We also spent a fair amount of time at Lake Michigan which is always enjoyable.

One of the only downsides of the trip was on our hike to Lake Michigan when Erick kicked some bark off a fallen birch tree which angered the tiny little bees living inside. Michael was the hero of the day yelling for Erick to run and getting him away from the angry swarm. (Flashback to the movie My Girl with the horrible bee scene if you will - although thankfully it was not that bad!...) Both Mike and Michael got stung once and thankfully that was all! Mike to this day still says that the sting hurts so I am very thankful that we got out as unscathed as we did!!!
A little nature (I will spare you my bird and mushroom pictures, of which I have PLENTY!)....

love the birthday pie picture (as well as the rest of them!) looks like a fun time.
So grateful to have that time and to have a place to go to get away. Certainly an excellent set of memories!
LOoks like a very peaceful break! Great time of year to be up north.
Is that an "Help, I'm lost" whistle on Erickson?
Bub Rubb: The whistles go "whoooooo".
Lil Sis: Dat compass is just for decoration.
Michelle-
You truly have a gift with the camera. Your shots are so beautiful! I love the camp fire shot with the water in the back ground. You even make Mike look good. :)
Thanks Kris! I like the campfire shot too! However, as I was explaining to my friend Tracy - if you take enough pictures (like the 150+ I took over the course of our trip!!!) surely some of them will come out looking nice! ha! My subjects have learned to either ignore me or figured that if they give me 1 or 2 nice pictures every once in a while I will leave them alone :-)
Como se dice in ingles "stalkerazzi"?
You say stalkerazzi, I say love for my family. It is like the PBS commercial or whatever goes...It's all in how you think about it.
I've been called the paparazzi before, too. Like everything else you do, they will thank you later.
I will keep my fingers crossed!!!! At least I will have some good material for when they start bringing girl friends home. HA!
